I do like the JZA80 Toyota Supra. Read on.

Big deal eh? Here comes the unusual part of the equasion: I'd take a non-turbo with a manual and spoiler delete over the Turbo. I may not get the fancy active front spoiler (how many of you knew Mk.IVs had this?) and powerrrrr of 2JZ-GTE bro, but I happily take dat 51/49 weight distribution.

Nothing wrong with a non-turbo Supra. They are still awesome cars :)

Fun fact: the non-turbo wasn't sold in Canada

Hold up, active front spoiler ?!

I know, the A80 is a brilliant car in all its variations (well maybe not the Automatic), but imo the non-turbo gets massively overshadowed by the hype about the TT. Maybe it's just that I have a crush on all cars with understated looks and a naturally aspirated straight six (as god intended).

The non-turbo is supposedly the better handling car, the turbo's weight distribution and monster torque make it something of a handful on a track I hear.

Nothing wrong with a well balanced car. Especially one you can always mod yourself.

Legendary 90s Toyota quality doesn't hurt, either :)

EU-Model (D) with hood scoop and deployed front spoiler

The active front spoiler automatically deployed at 90kph (55mph) and retracted at 70kph (43 or so mph) to its default position in the front bumper. The spoiler could also be manually deployed by the driver. For models without the rear wing it had to be immobilized, as both components were tuned to match each other. (badly translated I know).

Early swiss-market cars didn't get the aero package at all, since it was illegal at launch.

The Turbo has a 53/47 front-rear distribution, nothing too crazy still. But the TRC and sport tuned ABS help controlling the power quite well.

Not a fan of extensive mods, only tasteful discrete visual stuff and simple mechanical improvements to keep DD-ability high.

its a beautiful NA motor, it's just that the Supra was so heavy...

The NA JZA80 Supra is perfectly fine in my book, but I'd make it rev higher with some ITBs, a cam, headers, and some head work. I feel the same way about the NA E82/E89/E90 BMWs—although in the case of the Supra—I still lust after the turbo. Those are going to be worth 6 figures in the not-so-distant future in perfect stock condition, so the NA is probably more likely in my future. I'd put those Eibach/Bilstein coilovers from the turbo on the NA along with some chassis upgrades.

It's not like its direct competitors were particularly lightweight either.

just an opinion on why the name models are overlooked.

Unmolested Mk.IVs are surprisingly plentiful and relatively affordable where I live. Example.

Its not an unusual opinion. The models in both variations have been discussed by many fans. Its just the car is old and Toyota hasn't done anything since.

Give me a non-turbo, manual, targa top, in one of the metallic greens and I will be a happy camper.

Which is why Mark III A70 supra is VERY high on my list. Sleeker than 90's-era A80.

A 2JZ-GE, or even a 1.5JZ-GE (non-turbo, turbos are GTE engine code) with independent throttle bodies, and a nice header and exhaust, and a little bit of strategic jettisoning of ballast weight. As cool as targa tops are, I wouldn't say no to a slick-top, or a glass sunroof model.
